Hill Country Council for the Arts invites you to join Artist Matthew Teter as he comes to the AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center, and leads an intro class, Carving Techniques, at The Classroom, Saturday, February 22, 10:00 am-1:00 pm.
Goal and Objectives:
The class will focus on the basic elements of woodcarving skill. This first involves understanding
and using the tools correctly, efficiently and with safety always in mind. The teacher will
demonstrate proper usage of knife skills and other tools while the student observes and follows
along. This is the introduction to the mini course on carving.
A worksheet with various images will be distributed amongst the students for the purpose of
visually explaining certain techniques and movements when using the knife to achieve various
carving patterns. The teacher will demonstrate these using screen and camera for everyone to
watch at once. (Technology: camera, tripod, screen mirroring on large screen)
First carving moves: each student is given a 1/2 inch wooden dowel rod. We will be creating
what I call a “carving stick” which is basically a stick that demonstrates carving techniques and
patterns. This will give the student the ability to create a pleasing design while following the
instructions of the teacher and the visual worksheet. I will be helping individuals at this time
always bringing up the necessity of safety. (We do not want any cuts but if this happens we will
have a first aid kit to take care of the wound).
The last half of class will be work time and assistance.
Class fee: $75 for members, $85 for non-members
Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Class size is limited.
